Friday Fun – winter weather fun!

posted at 12:22pm, 15 Jan 10 by Siobhan [ 32 comments ]

How did you enjoy the big freeze recently? Did the snow make your journey to work difficult, or did you delight in the winter wonderland?  Today we’d like to hear your winter weather tips  so share in the comment box below.

Maybe you stayed indoors with a cup of cocoa and a good book. Or  you wrapped up warm in winter woolies, carrying a flask of your favourite Cafédirect drink with you and had fun in the snow.  Did you make a snowman (or snow elephant!) and decorate with coffee beans? Whatever it was we’d love to know.

To enter Friday Fun: Post your winter weather tips in the comment box below.  As usual, the most creative entry will win so be as inventive as you can!

The winner will win our Winter Weather Kit (pictured below) which includes a Bodum travel mug (which you can personalise with your favourite photo!), Cafédirect San Cristobal Drinking Chocolate, Everyday Tea and Machu Picchu Instant coffee. Prizes can only be sent to a UK or Ireland postal address.

  1. Cafédirect HQ says:

Thanks for all your stories and tips!

And the winner is……………… Lisa who drank a cup of coffee inside whilst watching her son build a snowman outside.

We also really loved Jane’s idea of commuting in ski gear and being snow-verdressed so have decided to send her some coffee too!

  2. Sara Lawrence says:

Buy a St.Bernard! fill the keg aroung it’s neck with nice hot coffee and if your neighbours get snowed in you can send it to warm them up! (remember though a dog is for life not just for snow)

  3. kay wilkinson says:

Stay trapped in the house for 4 weeks whilst it thaws, due to pushchair, huge hill, snow and ice incompatibility. When toddler and 4 year old get cabin fever and run madly around the living room singing ‘Baa, Baa Pink Sheep’ – hide in a cupboard nursing a calming cup of coffee, ocassionally peeking out to check they’ve not smashed anything or fallen over.

You think I’m joking! It was a hard couple of weeks!

  4. Michael says:

Most people, it seems, would rather not have the snow. So, if the snowfall has been sufficient, offer to clear the snow away for your neighbours, which will make you nice and warm [from sweaty exercise, plus added altruism ;-) ]. Then squash it all together [more warming, sweaty exercise] until you have, can you guess yet?, yes, an igloo! Of sorts. Brew some Fairtade coffee and go inside your cosy [albeit temporary and lacking in a view] new conservatory to enjoy ;-)

  5. Helena Richards says:

We were snowed in up in the borders & had no heating either. So, it was all in 1 room with the log fire. We drank hot drinks (all ft!) and played board games, including the kids. We did get out to build a snowman, but only in short bursts as we couldn’t risk getting too cold!

  6. Donna B says:

If your path is very icy & you have no grit left, use cat litter it works just as good xx

  23. Kimberley Stone says:

Bike riding in the snow: Even if you can’t see the kerb, it is still there! Ouch!

  24. Karen Foster says:

Don’t throw away those old clothes that are only fit for recycling. Take off the bath panel & pack them around your bath. Also use any bubble wrap you have left over from Christmas deliveries. The insulation will keep your bath warmer for much longer – a real benefit when the weather’s cold & you want to relax & warm up with a nice bath.

  25. Ian Henderson says:

save all loose change through year and stock up the cupboards at start of december incase the weather turns so bad you cannot leave home – also worth while keeping a few cartons of LONG LIFE MILK

  26. Nicky Russell says:

Its been jolly cold hasn’t it. Hope everone has been Ok.

Here are my tips for survivng the big chill!!

Keep curtains drawn and doors closed to block out draughts.
Wear lots of light layers of warm clothes (rather than one chunky layer).
    Keep active if possible,
Try and keep your home heated to temp 64 to 70°F, but if you cant heat the whole house, then just heat the room you’re in.
And lastly have lots of hot drinks and at least one hot meal a day if possible.

  27. tracey rollings says:

some kids dont like hot drinks so i make sure i have plenty of hot chocolate in so when they return home from school to warm them up i have a cup ready for them

  28. MARY MULLARKEY says:

I buy dishwasher salt, as it’s thicker, hence gets more space covered.
Stay in as much as possible! Hubby works nights, so he suffers the most, he has his shovel with him then I make him a flask of coffee, loads of sarnies, pack him a duvet and pillow.
I also wear, should I say, thermal long jones & vest! even at home, as well as outside, and I do the same for the girls, the heating bills are so high, so this helps as well.
    xx

  29. Sarah K says:

For those with children, have a fun craft session with old magazines, glue and scissors and make a collage. Then go out and build a snowman. The come in and eat soup to warm up. You can bake together or put on a play. Also, arrange play dates in case school is shut to stave off the boredom.
For the parents, keep blankets in the car, bread in the freezer and tins of beans in the larder in case you get snowed in the house.

  30. Alison M says:

Make sure you have got flat grippy cosy boots for walking about in, otherwise you will get cold toes and slip all over the place

  31. Julie says:

Buy a load of supermarkets own salt and store over the winter months to spray over your paths. It was a godsend for us this year

  32. Helen Holland says:

When you have to go out in the car, include an emergency pack e.g. sleeping bag, jump leads, shovel, food (biscuits, soup – make sure you have a tin opener!), extra clothes, a book etc.

Or work at home like I do, so you don’t have to worry about the snow. Unfortunately though it also means I can’t get to take any snow days, so have had no time off :-(
