Friday Fun – Friday 13th special!

Happy Friday the 13th! Apparently there’s a whole host of coffee and tea superstitions out there – here are a few that I quite liked:
* Coffee spilled on a saucer means you’ll become wealthy and spilling tea while making it means good news. (I knew my clumsiness would pay off somehow!)
* A big bubble in coffee crema is considered to signifydisappointment, whilst bubbles in tea signify kisses.
* When two women pour from the same teapot, one will be pregnant within the year!
* Emptying a teapot on a day that fishing will take place will ensure bad fishing results. (You’d be better off taking some
Machu Picchu fishing instead then!)
We want to know if you or any of your friends have any coffee or tea superstitions. Do you have to stir your brew in a certain way? Or prepare your favourite coffee in a certain way? What would happen if you didn’t do this?!
The rules are simple:
To enter, tell us your favourite coffee/tea/drinking chocolate superstitions and post in the comment box of this blog post.
You have until 5.30pm today to post your response. The most creative or interesting entry will be chosen by judges from Cafédirect and announced on Monday on our blog.

It’s bad luck to stir coffee with a fork!
My nans friend always used to say that if someone put 2 spoons in your cup instead of one you would have twins!
Not sure where they got that from!
Its bad luck to spill tea into the saucer!
Reading tea leaves of course to predict the future! Shame the same can’t really be done with tea bags!!
When my hubby makes me a cappuccino he always makes it with the frothy milk piled into a peak in the centre then sprinkles with chocolate – he says good luck follows the cream – I think he just takes the mickey to watch me try and drink it without getting it all over my nose!
I have heard it said that if you dream you are thirsty for tea, you will be surprised by uninvited guests that day.
As I can’t remember my dreams all the time, I can’t run the risk of dreaming about being thirsty and not remembering it; nobody likes surprise guest turning up when you have settled into your comfy clothes and sat down to watch tv or read. I therefore have a tea after dinner to fulfil any such dream cravings. This started off as a joke but now it’s a routine!
I also remember someone once saying that some fishermen never pass a cup of tea through the ladder or through a porthole as they thought it to be unlucky! I don’t know how true this is but it’s unusual and it might still go on at sea for all we know
The old wives tale of spilling your tea down you when you are pregnant came true for me.
They say where it splashes.. the baby will have a tea stain birthmark on the nearest part of its body to the splash..and spookily enough my daughter has one on her leg.
To be honest she should be covered in them going by the amount of tea i spilt down myself during those 9 months!

I was always told as a kid by my Nanna that it was bad luck to stir tea anti-clockwise…even to this day I can’t do it! xx
If you stir your tea or coffee anti clockwise, your luck will be bad for as many years as the stirs you made . . what an odd superstition
@paulinepppp (Twitter)
I’ve always found it bad luck trying to make coffee for a coffee connoisseur. So I now get my husband to make his own!
stirring tea counterclockwise means bad luck but catching the bubbles on top of the coffee is good luck…pass me the coffee!
i was always told coffee boiling over means it’s going to rain
so someone out there must be over boiling a lot of coffee
If two women pour from the same teapot, then one of them will have a baby within the year – stay away from my teapot ladies!!!
My Nan always said it was lucky if you got a stray tea-leaf in your cup but it happened so often when at hers I was relieved when she changed over to tea bags!
I think you have to always stir your tea or coffee clockwise otherwise it’s bad luck. My Mum told me this when I was younger and I still believe it now
Whoops just realised the one i just posted was already at the top of the page!! Here’s another:
If the lid of the pot is left off, then a stranger will call at the house.
And my gran always said:
If you make tea too weak, you will lose the friendship of someone close to you, which is a shame as i like my tea weak!!
If your coffee boils over it means it is going to rain. But if you get bubbles in your cup of coffee you are going to come into money.
Bubbles on your tea signify kisses!
I think I’ll tell my husband this after I’ve stirred his tea with a whisk!
Thanks for all of the entries to our Friday the 13th competition! There are some great supersition stories here….
The competition is now closed, but check back Monday to see who has won the Cafédirect Friday the 13th prize
Have a great weekend everyone!

And the winner is….
Katie with her entry about fishermen only passing cups of tea directly to each other and not through ladders. We thought it was really quirky and who knows – it might still go on at sea!
We hope you enjoy your prize!
The team also really liked hearing all of your coffee and tea rituals – there’s a lot of clockwise-stirrers out there!
