We’ve known this since we started back in 1991 when three co-operatives in Peru, Costa Rica and Mexico shipped a container each of coffee loaned on trust the UK. The beans were roasted, ground and packaged and sold through church halls, charity shops and at local events. From these modest beginnings, Cafédirect was born….

We’ve had many exciting milestones since then, including the UK’s biggest ethical public share issue back in 2004. We widened the ownership of the company to our producer partners and gave our loyal consumers the chance to own part of the company too. The share issue was fully subscribed in less than four months. It captured the imagination of over 4,500 people, who wanted a social return in addition to a financial return.
