Friend of the Month! Dayve Dean
There are thousands of Friends of Cafedirect out there, drinking our coffee, tea and drinking chocolate every day, some of you host coffee mornings or use our Toolkits to raise the profile of Cafédirect and our values. Others actually help us out at events, such as the Hay Festival or TasteFair.
Each month a Friend of Cafédirect will share with us some of their experiences. If you would like to be included next month, please send a quick mail to friends@cafedirect.co.uk
Dayve Dean is our first ‘Friend of the Month’, fresh from helping us out at Hay…

What is your favourite Cafédirect drink?
Kilimanjaro, closely followed by Mount Elgon.
How long have you been drinking it?
Around a year for Kilimanjaro, and a couple of weeks for Mount Elgon.
How did you discover Cafédirect?
I started becoming more ethically aware and keen to switch to more Fairtrade brands around 5 or 6 years ago (after splitting with the ex and finally being able to make my own shopping choices!). I tried a number of Fairtrade coffees, and then just happened to try Cafédirect. I continued to buy the products and get more involved with the company by reading the website and signing up to become a Friend of Cafédirect.
Why do you love Cafédirect?
Several reasons, the two most important being that the taste is excellent, and the ethics are spot on. It’s great to feel that you are doing something worthwhile by choosing a certain brand of coffee, and really seeing how much more Cafédirect does than just the Fairtrade standards. It’s also fantastic to be able to feel part of the company through the Friends newsletters and the various events.

What is the best thing about being a Friend Of Cafédirect?
As above, feeling closely connected to the company and the producers, and being given the opportunity to take part in some amazing events with Cafédirect throughout the year.
Name 1 thing not many people know about you?
I used to work on Coronation Street!
What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?
Playing a gig with my band, James and the Giant.
Tea or coffee?
Coffee – or maybe mint or herbal tea if I’m a bit caffeined out
Sunset or Sunrise?
Sunrise. It’s the start of a new day, full of ambition, energy and a good time for the first Cafédirect of the day. (We didn’t pay him to say this!!)
If you could have 3 wishes granted, what would they be?
We’d get the environment sorted out so that everyone keeps within a sustainable carbon level, flying is either phased out or becomes a rare luxury, renewable energy and microgeneration becomes the norm, public transport get to a level where cars are rarely needed – you get the idea.
On a related note, world economies would get sorted out meaning fairness for all people and countries, and we’d realise that consumerism isn’t sustainable.
And on a more selfish note, my band becomes successful.
Coffee cup half empty or half full?
Depends whether you’re filling (half full? – fill ‘er up!) or drinking (half empty? Refill!)
